What is Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment?
For your child or teenager to achieve a straighter set of teeth and a fully corrected bite, Phase 2 Orthodontics may be required. This next phase of treatment occurs after all permanent teeth have erupted and is designed to correct any misalignment that may have developed between Phase 1 and Phase 2, especially as it pertains to erupting teeth.
Our team will place metal brackets and wires on the top and lower rows of teeth to guide any crooked, gapped, or misaligned teeth into their proper place.
Does My Child Need Phase 2 Orthodontics?
A scheduled consultation with your child’s orthodontist in San Ramon will determine if they need Phase 2 Orthodontics. While some children do not need to pursue this second phase, others do, and it is most likely to be the case if your teen:
- Has erupted teeth that are crooked, gapped, or overlapping
- Has a narrow airway that prevents them from breathing through their nose
- Experiences jaw discomfort
- Has a misaligned bite that is causing them to bite the inside of their cheeks
What Happens After Phase 2 Orthodontics?
Since your child will need to wear braces during Phase 2, although this timeframe is likely to be much shorter than that of those who did not receive Phase 1 Orthodontics, they will still be required to wear a retainer afterward. The retention phase is crucial to their overall success, as a fixed or removable retainer ensures their teeth remain in their new position and do not revert to their previous position.
You can expect their orthodontist to explain how long they will need to wear a retainer once it is time to move on to the next phase of treatment.
