Orthodontic care isn’t just for the teen years, and many kids can benefit from being seen earlier. Getting an early evaluation helps our team keep an eye on how the teeth and jaw are developing and step in if something doesn’t look quite right. That’s why we recommended that children come in for a Phase 1 orthodontic consultation around age 7. During this visit, we can spot potential issues early and decide if treatment could help. Read on to learn more, or give our team a call to schedule a visit for your child!

How Phase 1 Orthodontics Works

Phase 1 orthodontics, also called “interceptive orthodontics,” focuses on guiding how a child’s teeth and jaw develop while they’re still growing. The goal is to create a healthier foundation early on so there’s a better chance for a more balanced, straighter smile later. Every child’s needs are different, so treatment is tailored to what’s going on with their smile and may include things like expanders, limited braces, space maintainers, or a mix of options.

This method usually takes about 10 to 14 months, though timing can vary based on the treatment plan. Once it’s complete, we’ll continue to keep an eye on how your child’s smile is developing and step in again if needed as more adult teeth come into place.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Not all children will require Phase 1 Orthodontics. For many, however, it can provide meaningful benefits. This type of treatment might be recommended if a child has:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Teeth that stick out
  • Spaces or gaps between teeth
  • Difficulty chewing food
  • Challenges with clear speech
  • Jaw alignment issues

The Benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontics

Phase 1 Orthodontics can offer several benefits for your child and their smile, including:

  • Shorter overall treatment time: Addressing concerns early can reduce the need for more extensive orthodontic care later, which can help save both time and cost.
  • Improved oral function: Early alignment can support better development, making it easier for your child to chew, speak, and smile comfortably in the long run.
  • Increased confidence: Helping shape a healthier, straighter smile early can boost your child’s self-esteem and positively impact their social and emotional well-being.
