What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are small, cap-like restorations that are custom fitted to be placed over the biting surface of compromised teeth. At Gale Ranch Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics of San Ramon, we use high-quality ceramic, which is able to mimic the natural appearance of tooth enamel, to craft our crowns from. This allows for incredibly durable, lasting results, as well as a beautiful aesthetic that will help your teen still feel confident when they smile.

We typically recommend dental crowns in the following scenarios:

  • To protect a tooth that has just had a root canal.
  • To strengthen and seal off a tooth with a large dental filling.
  • To enhance the appearance of severely misshapen teeth.
  • To protect a tooth that is fractured or severely damaged.

The Dental Crown Process

The process of getting a dental crown typically takes place over two appointments at our office. After your child has received any necessary preliminary treatments, like a root canal or filling, we’ll prepare their tooth for the crown and capture a digital impression of it. This only takes a moment and is completely pain-free!

We’ll send the impression off to our dental laboratory, where they’ll craft your teen’s dental crown. Before we send them home, we’ll secure a temporary restoration atop the prepared tooth for protection. Once the final crown is sent back to our office, we’ll have you bring your teen back in so we can permanently cement the restoration onto their tooth.

  • Natural-looking crowns aid in confidence and social development.
