So if the discomfort suddenly disappears, you might feel relieved. You might even think that the problem simply solved itself.

Unfortunately, toothaches can be a bit more complicated than that, and your dentist will most likely still recommend pulp therapy for your child. Keep reading to learn why this treatment is sometimes necessary, even when a tooth stops hurting.

Why Pulp Therapy Might be Recommended

Pulp therapy is very similar to a root canal, except that the treatment process has pediatric baby teeth in mind. Often, a crown is not placed on the affected tooth like it would be after a root canal.

A dentist might recommend pulp therapy when an infection spreads deep inside of a pearly white, where a squishy center known as “pulp” lies. Dental pulp also contains nerve clusters, meaning that an infection that has reached the pulp can very well cause dental nerve damage. It can even travel to neighboring teeth, so removing the pulp is often the best way to stop the spread.

No Toothache, No Problem – Right?

Surely if a toothache has vanished, that means your child’s body has managed to fight off the infection, right? Unfortunately, unlike other areas of the body, the mouth is physically unable to do this. Without treatment, oral problems only become worse and more complicated.

The more likely explanation is that the infection has caused some damage to the dental nerves, preventing pain signals from being relayed to the brain. Thus, the underlying problem still exists – it’s just not causing any immediate discomfort.

Contact Your Dentist to Be Sure

That said, it’s always best to consult with your dentist before subscribing to any one theory or treatment plan! After they take a closer look at your child’s mouth with a visual exam and X-rays, they’ll be able to provide an accurate diagnosis.

Based on their findings, your dentist may recommend pulp therapy – or they may not. It all depends on your child’s unique oral situation. Either way, though, you can count on your pediatric dentist to help you through the process and make sure your child feels comfortable during their treatment.

About the Practice

Our gentle and compassionate pediatric dentists (and orthodontist!) have plenty of experience working with children.
